Walk Through Religious and Historical Sites
Nepal is a land of spirituality and rich cultural heritage as much as it is the land of mountains. That’s why this family vacation package brought to you by Altitude Himalaya comes with a deep dive into some of Nepal’s most sacred and historic landmarks.
You’ll visit the ancient temples, peaceful stupas, and roam around the vibrant streets of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Bandipur, and Pokhara. This trip makes your family aware that in this country, both Hindu and Buddhist religions coexist.
Read below to learn about the religious and historical sites you’ll be vistiing on your ultimate family vacation in Nepal:
Heritage Walk in Kathmandu Valley
Kathmandu Valley is where culture, spirituality, and architecture combines and that makes it probably one of the best capital regions in the world. It’s listed as a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site, and includes seven distinguished monument zones spread across the valley.
Here are the main places you’ll visit on this walk:
- Pashupatinath Temple: It’s one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Here, you’re going to witness the gold-roofed pagodas, open-air cremation sites in the Bagmati River, and sadhus deep in meditation (especially during the festive season).
- Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple): This is a Buddhist pilgrimage site offering panoramic views of Kathmandu and guarded by the holy monkeys. It’s also equally important for Hindus. You’ll even find Ajimaa Temple, which is meant to protect the mahachaitya here.
- Boudhanath Stupa: Considered to house one of the largest spherical stupas in the world, this place is a spiritual hub for Tibetan Buddhists, with monks circling it under rows of fluttering prayer flags.
- Kathmandu Durbar Square: This is an entire complex featuring the old royal palace courtyard, intricate temples, Kumari Ghar (home of the Living Goddess), and the history of the Malla and Shah kings engraved in every structure you find.
- Narayanhiti Palace Museum: While not listed as one of the monument zones, this is a museum that gives your family a peek into the life of Nepal’s last monarchs. You’ll witness the rooms where King Birendra and his royal family were massacred in 2001.
- Bhaktapur Durbar Square: This is yet another durbar square on your family’s visit to Nepal. The full-day tour of Bhaktapur will take you to all the four square here (Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Dattatreya Square, and Pottery Square). And don’t forget to make your own clay and take it home as a souvenir and also try Juju Dhau, known as the king of curds.
- Changu Narayan Temple: The Bhaktapur visit also takes you to the oldest temple in Nepal, reportedly built around the 4th century. From astonishing stone and wood carvings to the devotion towards Lord Vishnu, this temple is a perfect stop as you head towards Nagarkot.
- Patan Durbar Square: Included in the final day of your Kathmandu tour, this is the smallest of the three durbar square in the valley. Nonetheless, you get to explore its rich history, intricate Newari architecture, and vibrant local culture, making this trip truly unforgettable.
Enjoy Spirituality at Namobuddha Monastery
Just in the outskirts of Kathmandu valley is where Namo Buddha Monastery is situated, holding immense Buddhist significance. The monastery here was built over the remains of Prince Mahasattva, who as per legends say that he offered his body to a starving tigress and her cubs.
When Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche was not satisfied with how the two holy stupas were cared, he was the one to build this third holy site for the Buddhist community. And today, thousands of pilgrims as well as tourists pay a visit here.
Home to over 250 monks, the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery also has a Shree Mangal Dvip Branch School within the premises. You can stop by to explore how young monks and nuns are deeply immersed in the philosophy and meditation.
Also, there are Mahakala and Dewachen temples that you can stop by. Although this trip to Namobuddha is short, you’re still going to have one of the best Buddhist excursions.
Strolling in the Historic Streets of Bandipur
Bandipur of Tanahun district is often regarded as a living museum of Newari culture. From its unique architecture to age-old traditions, there’s so much to explore in this small town located above the hills.
We won’t have sufficient time to explore every corner of Bandipur on this trip. However, even a casual stroll through its beautifully preserved streets offers you enough glimpses of wooden windows and traditional Newari homes to make your family truly appreciate the town’s charm.
If time permits, you can also visit Bindabasini Temple, Khadga Devi Temple, the nearby Buddhist monasteries, and even go for a short uphill hike to Thani Mai Temple.
Explore Sacred Sites in Pokhara
Many might not know this fact: Pokhara city is called the tourism capital of Nepal. With serene lakes (Phewa, Begnas, and Rupa) along with the backdrop of the Fishtail and Annapurna mountain, this city perfectly serves as a hub for travellers and trekkers.
But beyond that, Pokhara even holds deep religious importance, which you family is looking for. And on this this family trip, our team at Altitude Himalaya is here to help you explore these sacred landmarks:
- Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave: This sacred cave has a revered Shiva lingam inside of the cave that makes it perfect for the Hindu pilgrims to pay a visit. You won’t just walk inside in the dark, but even get a scenic view of the Devi’s Falls from here, another spot that you’ll visit on this trip..
- Pumdikot Shiva Statue: Sitting on top of the Pumdi Bhumdi hilltop, this is the 108-feet tall Shiva statue, the second-largest in Nepal. You’ll find pilgrims visiting here for prayers and others enjoy the panoramic mountain views. With your family, you can take blessings from Lord Mahadev, which would be a great lesson for your kids too!
- World Peace Pagoda: Standing above the Phewa Lake, this Japanese-style pagoda was built by Japanese monks as part of a global peace movement. It’s famous for enjoying the calm surroundings as well as incredible views of the city.
- Tal Barahi Temple (Optional): Located right in the middle of the Phewa Lake, this two-storied pagoda-style temple is dedicated to the Goddess Barahi. The island doesn’t just serve as a natural gateway for your family but also a place to witness the devotees offering prayers and taking blessings from the sacred site.

Along with Everest, you’ll also get glimpses of Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, Ganesh Himal, and dozens more, from 25,000 ft above!
Sunrise and Sunset Views From Himalayan Hilltops
Nepal offers some of the most magical sunrise and sunset experiences you’ll ever witness in your life. These aren’t your typical views!
Here, you're above the clouds, gazing at the Himalayas turning golden with the first or last light of the day. This is the real golden hour that everyone talks about. And no matter how much we try to portray it in words or photos, the real moment is always even more mesmerizing in person.
Here are the main Himalayan hilltops you’ll visit for sunrise and sunset moments during this ultimate Nepal trip with your family:
- Nagarkot (2,175m): Located in Bhaktapur district, you’ll stay here overnight after exploring Bhaktapur. On a clear day, the sunrise reveals majestic peaks like Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Gaurishankar, and even a distant view of Mt. Everest.
- Dhulikhel (1,550m): Situated in Kavrepalanchok district, you’ll end your day here after the spiritual visit to Namo Buddha. The landscape opens up to include views of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Gaurishankar, and other nearby peaks.
- Bandipur (1,030m): Hike up to Thani Mai Temple in the evening for sunset views. On your way to Pokhara, this overnight stop offers a peaceful atmosphere and clear sights of the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu ranges.
- Poon Hill (3,210m): An early morning hike from Ghorepani brings you closest to the mountains your family will experience on this trip. Expect to witness jaw-dropping views of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), and more!
- Tadapani (2,630m): This stop on your way to Ghandruk also delivers jaw-dropping views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. It’s a perfect, peaceful stop before continuing your trek further.
- Ghandruk (2,012m): A Gurung village in the heart of the Annapurna Conservation Area, where culture meets nature. The view of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre feels so close you could almost touch them. This is the same place that went viral on social media, so your family will love taking snaps here.
- Tanchowk (approx. 2,000m): A peaceful village located before reaching Dhampus. This hidden gem offers up-close views of Machhapuchhre and surrounding Annapurna peaks, a slightly different scene from other parts of the trek.
- Dhampus (1,650m): Another scenic Gurung village that offers panoramic views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Lamjung Himal. You’ll reach here passing via Phedi and enjoy a cultural stay with both sunrise and sunset experience.

Birdwatching Escape at Bishazari Lake
Just outside Chitwan National Park lies Bishazari Lake, which translates to “Twenty Thousand Lakes.” This wetland is a paradise for wildlife lovers, especially those who love bird watching!
Over 270 bird species have already been recorded in this area. Families can expect sightings of both resident and migratory birds, depending on the season:
- In winter, waterfowl and Siberian migrants like bar-headed geese, Brahminy ducks, pintails, and various stork species can be seen around the region.
- In summer, you may spot the beautiful Indian paradise flycatcher, Indian pitta, and parakeets fluttering through the trees.
Other notable bird species you can expect to spot at Bishazari Lake include Bengal florican, Great hornbill, Lesser adjutant stork, Grey-headed fishing eagle Stork-billed kingfisher, Painted stork, etc.
Discovering Pokhara’s Natural Wonders
Earlier, we explored Pokhara’s sacred landmarks, but the real magic here lies in its natural beauty. This is the place where you can see lakes, waterfalls, mountain views, and more! And lucky for your family, this trip with Altitude Himalaya will take you through these natural wonders:
- Phewa Lake: Whether you're just enjoying the view of the lake from the vibrant Lakeside or out kayaking/boating on the water itself, it will be a perfect escape. What makes it even more special is the reflection of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna mountains, which everyone in your family will absolutely love.
- Devi’s Falls: The first stop in your Pokhara sightseeing tour is a dramatic waterfall with a black past. Known for its strong current and mist, especially during monsoon, this fall got its name after a Swiss lady tragically drowned here. So, while it may appear stunning, it’s always recommended to keep a safe distance, especially when taking snaps.
- Hill Stations Around Pokhara: Earlier we mentioned sacred spots like Pumdikot and the World Peace Pagoda, but they’re more than just religious. These hilltops offer stunning panoramic views of the landscape and distant mountains. And not to forget, Sarangkot is also on the list. Along with the beautiful sunrise views, the newly built Panchamukhi Ganesh statue has quickly become a must-visit spot too!

Boating and Kayaking Fun on Phewa Lake
Both boating and kayaking are perfect family-friendly activities to enjoy at Phewa Lake. Your Phewa Lake adventure begins with kayaking on the first day you visit Pokhara.
This exciting trend is easy to learn and safe for all ages. Even kids can participate as long as a guardian is present.
Single and tandem kayaks are available at Phewa Lake, and for those trying stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kids must ride with an adult on the same board for safety. Here at Altitude Himalaya, safety is our top priority.
Tandem kayaks can also be arranged for partners, making it a bonding experience in Pokhara. Tell us when was the last time you two shared an adventure like this?
Note that the kayaking session usually lasts about an hour and is best enjoyed in the evening, experiencing the sunset with all family members on board for extra fun!
During your Pokhara sightseeing day, when you descend from the World Peace Pagoda, you’ll experience traditional boating. A professional boatman will guide you across the lake for about half an hour to an hour and drop you off on the other side.
Depending on your group size, you’ll either be seated in a typical wooden rowboat (max four people) or a sailing boat (for larger groups).
The boating and kayaking adventure can also include a visit to Tal Barahi Temple or exploring different scenic corners of Phewa Lake. But as mentioned earlier, that’s completely optional.
Trekking Along Annapurna Trails: Ghorepani to Sarangkot
Annapurna Conservation Area is home to some of Nepal’s most iconic trekking trails, from the legendary Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) route to the picturesque Ghorepani-Poon Hill trek. Our specific itinerary is designed for families, balancing short hikes, village life, and stunning mountain views.
The journey begins with a drive to Ulleri or Banthanti, depending on road conditions. From the trailhead, you’ll hike about 4 to 5 hours (nearly 8 to 10 km) to reach Ghorepani, preparing for the next morning’s climb up to Poon Hill.
It’s a 1-hour uphill hike (spanning a maximum of 2 km) to witness the beautiful sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Then, you’ll descend back to Ghorepani for breakfast before continuing on to Tadapani.
This next trek takes 5 to 6 hours (around 9 km) through rhododendron forests. You'll spend the night in a village lodge surrounded by Gurung culture and mountain silence.
Next is an easier 4 to 5 hour hike (about 7 km) down to Ghandruk, one of the most beautiful Gurung villages in the region. The stunning mountain views combined with local conversations make this one of the best destinations in our package!
From here, you’ll walk the Annapurna trail to Tanchowk, a lesser-known but perfect family hike. It takes around 5 hours, spanning up to 9 km. Note that Tanchowk carries similar traditional village vibes as Tadapani, offering a deep look into Nepali rural life.
You then continue your trek to Dhampus via Australian Base Camp (2,100 meters), a scenic route adding an extra hour but totally worth it. This stretch takes about 5 hours (covering 8 km). You also have the option to skip Australian Base Camp and go straight to Dhampus.
The final trail is a descent to Phedi (about 2 hours, nearly 6 km), followed by a walk to Sarangkot, which is 7 km on foot. The last stretch can also be skipped by taking a private vehicle directly to Sarangkot.
Optional Thrills and Adventures in Pokhara
The finale of your trip is where you’ll indulge in some exciting activities with your family or go solo! From adrenaline-pumping adventures to scenic sky rides, Pokhara has something thrilling for every age group.

Cultural Experiences on the Ultimate Family Trip
Nepal’s vibrant culture is something your family absolutely needs to explore in many different ways throughout this trip.
From the Newar communities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Bandipur to the Tharu villages of Chitwan, and the warm-hearted Gurung and Magar families of the Annapurna region. Every stop on your Nepal journey connects you with people, traditions, and their stories!
Want to take a peek into what we’re talking about? Keep reading below.
Meet Newar Communities in Kathmandu and Bandipur
Both Kathmandu and Bhaktapur are part of the bigger Kathmandu Valley that you’ll explore on this Ultimate Nepal Family Vacation. And the valley is mostly about Newar communities who have preserved their rich culture for centuries.
Newars are known for their amazing hospitality and festivals (known as jatras). And since they are the oldest inhabitants in the valley, they have a great role in shaping Kathmandu’s identity.
A very similar warm and cultural vibe can be found in Bandipur. Here, you, along with your family members can stroll through the streets lined with traditional Newari houses and get a glimpse into their everyday lifestyle.
On all three of these trips, you also have the option to try authentic Newari cuisine, whether you’re picking lunch or just trying a few items for snacks. The must-try foods include Yomari, Bara, Samay Bhaji, Chatamari, JuJu Dhau (of Bhaktapur), etc.
Explore Tharu Village and Traditional Lifestyle
The trip to Chitwan also takes your family to one of the traditional Tharu villages in Sauraha. You won’t just explore their unique mud houses but even get to connect with the indigenous Madhesi communities living in this region.
This short part of the Chitwan National Park exploration gives you a cultural immersion into how raw, simple, and grounded their lifestyle is! Trust us when we say that it’s going to be an eye-opening experience, especially for kids!
Not to forget that your stay at the resort will include a special Tharu cultural program right before dinner. This gives you and your family a complete insight into their traditional dances, music, and attire firsthand.
In fact, you can even join the dance circle and try their cultural steps together. It’s a fun as well as educational way to bond as a family while learning something entirely new.
Connect with Gurung and Magar Families in Annapurna CA
The trekking trails in the Himalayan region of the Annapurna Conservation Area expose you to different communities of Magars and Gurungs, along with Tibetan Buddhists.
Like the Newars and Tharus, they too are incredibly hospitable, and that too at decently high altitudes! These are the very people who will be at your service throughout the trail, offering food, lodging, and heartfelt warmth.
In fact, going further, you’ll find the same ethnic groups in places like the ABC and even higher altitudes. So, even trekking at the lower altitudes lets you understand so much from them. Don’t forget to hear stories from them, which are truly unique and inspiring!
You’ll even have the option to try on their traditional attire, which we highly recommend! Don’t forget to make those viral TikToks as well. Your family won’t just be welcomed in places like Dhampus, Ghandruk, Tanchowk, Ghorepani, and Tadapani (if destiny allows), you might just go viral across all of Nepal!
Enjoy Cultural Program Over Farewell Dinner
Your Nepal vacation ends with a dinner at one of the finest restaurants that also offers a cultural program featuring more ethnic groups, their dances, and glimpses into their traditional attires. They’ll put on a show that you’ll absolutely love and admire. So don’t forget to praise them.
