Langtang, aka Lamtang National Park, offers some of the best trekking destinations after the Sagarmatha/Everest and Annapurna regions. From learning about Tibetan Buddhism to visiting sacred lakes, the place has everything in the books a trekker could wish for.
One essential thing to keep in mind is that Langtang isn’t just about the village and the Kyanjin Gompa you see in videos. The region holds a rich history, culture, customs, and traditions, as it’s also the second-oldest national park in the country.
It’s home to a variety of mountain ranges, including Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Langshisa Ri, Gangchempo, Yala Peak, Naya Khang, and Paldor Peak. More than that, other Himalayan mountain ranges can also be seen from different parts of the national park.
The main livelihoods of the Langtangpa people have been tourism and agropastoralism. One of the most iconic products here is Yak Cheese, which is famous all across the globe. Don’t worry! Booking your trek with Altitude Himalaya will take you to the cheese-making factory here too.
No matter which part of the Langtang trek you choose, you’ll be passing through mostly Sal forest, gradually transitioning into hill forest. You’ll get glimpses of chir pine, Rhododendron, Nepalese alder, silver fir, hemlock, larch, birch, silver fir, Sorbus microphyla, and more.
And if you’re lucky enough, Langtang can provide you with the opportunity to spot various wildlife, including red pandas, snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, Himalayan tahrs, musk deer, wild dogs, ghorals, serows, Impeyan pheasants, and others.

- Langtang Valley with Kyanjin Gompa: One of the best panoramic trekking destinations, ideal for beginners, with surreal mountain views along with ancient Tibetan monasteries to explore.
- Gosaikunda Lake: A sacred lake in the Langtang region dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is believed to have thrown his trident into the mountains, forming the lake in order to drink water to cool his burning throat after Samudra Manthan.
- Panch Pokhari: The combination of five ponds makes this a great monsoon destination, as the trail offers blooming wildflowers—an absolute favorite among locals here in Nepal.
- Ama Yangri: A short and altitude-friendly trek that gives you a glimpse into the Hyolmo community of the Helambu region, along with panoramic views of distant mountain ranges.
- Ruby Valley: A camping trek that leads you to a hidden valley nestled between the Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal. You can even add an option to reach the Ganesh Himal Base Camp.

People and Culture in the Langtang Region
When you travel to Langtang National Park and the surrounding region, you’re likely going to meet mostly Tamang, Bhotia, and Yolmo people. The people here follow Tibetan Buddhism, primarily the Bon doctrine.
The major festival celebrated here is the Tarna Festival, which takes place every year on Bhadra Purnima. It commemorates the successful completion of Guru Rinpoche's 600-year-old meditation in one of the caves in Upper Langtang.
Besides this, festivals such as Mani Rimdu, Dawa Dangpo Tsech, Loshar (Tibetan New Year), Buddha Jayanti, Dashain, and Tihar are also celebrated here.
One essential thing we want to point out is that people in the Langtang region were greatly affected by the 2015 Nepal Earthquake. From homes being damaged to the loss of loved ones, it was a devastating period.
Yet, you’ll find that the people of Langtang remain calm and welcoming. When here, don’t forget to express your sympathy and help them out as much as you can. Our entire team at Altitude Himalaya would remain grateful to you!
From hospitality to your stays, the people in Langtang ensure that it will be the absolute best at the heart of the Himalayas. You’ll mostly stay in local teahouses and lodges and try Nepalese food like Dal Bhat, along with options to pick Western food too.
