The temperature is just right, the sky is blue, and there is a clear view of the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

What is Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek?

One of the most rewarding and beautiful treks in Nepal is the Tsum valley trek. Tsum valley is a hidden valley of Nepal with celestial and most unique landscapes and culture. Tsum valley lies in the northern part of Nepal close to the Tibetan border making it one of the restricted areas of Nepal.

This trek takes you to a completely different world with lots of opportunities to experience and see the culture, and nature and get first-hand trekking experience in the isolated trekking routes. Your trek starts from Kathmandu with guided full-day sightseeing. You will explore the ancient monuments that are included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites. You will have one day in Kathmandu for sightseeing and trek preparation meaning you can shop for trekking gare.

Your trek starts from the village of Arughat, Dhading which is in two parts, on opposite sides of the Budhi Gandaki. Arughat Bazaar is large, clean, and prosperous with hotels and shops selling clothes, food, and hardware. You will drive further to reach Soti Khola and then Macchakhola. Macchakhola (869m) is the starting point of your trek. You will pass through this village to start your Tsum valley trek. Along the route, you will walk past paved stones along with Mani walls and high overlooks over rivers. Then you will reach the appealing village of Jagat which lies on the west side of the Budhi Gandaki river.

The trek throughout is a very pleasant one. You will pass by Ekle Bhatti where the trail separates between Tsum Valley and Manaslu Circuit Trek. As you trek, you will notice the welcome board and move towards Lokpa. The trek can be good as you can observe the snowy cones of Mt. Ganesh and Mt. Shringi. The route takes you to Gumling where you only capture the serene nature. Shortly, you will cross the Syar Khola again, arriving at the village of Chumling. From Chhokang Paro, the Ganesh Himal range can be seen directly to the south, providing superb views of the Himal Chuli peaks to the southwest.

The Nile is the last village at the top of Tsum valley. On the way, you will go to Piren Phu cave which is additionally one of the holiest caves in the Tsum valley. The cave gives a mind-boggling view of Shiar Khola, Rachen Gumba, and beautiful settlements in the middle of extensive agricultural land. The Mu Gompa lies on the highest and most remote part of the Tsum Valley. At the monastery, you can see monks busy with their daily routine and the breathtaking view of the border of Tibet. You will trek the same route back to Jagat and then to Tatopani from where you will take a drive back to Kathmandu.

Tsum Valley - the hidden Gem.

The trails of Manaslu Tsum Valley Trekking are adorned with beautiful Chortens and bordered by Mani walls. These walls are crafted from numerous stone slabs that are intricately carved with depictions of deities and inscribed with prayers. Meanwhile, the people in this place refrain from slaughtering animals, even as a sacrificial offering to the gods.

The Tsum Valley boasts a stunning and untamed landscape, characterized by lush greenery and breathtaking features such as deep gorges, charming hamlets, sacred gompas, ornate Chortens, and the glistening snow-capped peaks that crown the mountains. As you depart from the main Manaslu Trail and venture into the Tsum valley, a distinct sensation washes over you, as if you are truly stepping into a hidden and secluded valley. The experience you have here is truly unique compared to other treks. The walking routes are not crowded with tourists, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of the natural surroundings.

Manaslu Region of Nepal

The Manaslu Region in Nepal is considered to be one of the least explored trekking trails. The trek in the Himalayas is incredibly captivating. One of the most popular treks in the Manaslu region is the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The highest point of the Manaslu Circuit trek is Larkya La Pass. The Manaslu region is located in a restricted area of Nepal, which allows visitors to experience the untouched beauty of nature.

Embark on a journey along the less frequented trails in rural Nepal, where you will be treated to breathtaking views that must be witnessed in their full splendor. In contrast, this region provides a unique experience compared to treks in the Everest and Annapurna regions, which attract a larger number of trekkers. Few visitors are encountered along the way, making it a distinct and less crowded experience. The trek around Manaslu is unique because it takes you through pristine regions that were previously inaccessible. The area is now exclusively open to organized trekking parties. The region offers a wonderful blend of cultural diversity and incredible mountain scenery.

Travel insurance: Travel insurance is important before traveling to a new place especially when you are traveling for adventure. Travel insurance covers risks such as loss of personal belongings, and any unexpected expenses. Travel insurance also covers sudden medical emergencies such as accidents. It also covers high-altitude emergency evacuation in case of trekking. Travel insurance is not compulsory but highly recommended.

Medical emergency: If you face any serious medical emergency during your trekking program you will immediately evacuate the place through Helicopter Rescue which the traveler’s insurance company will cover. While trekking to the highland of Nepal you may face minor health issues such as scratches, headaches, etc. For such a situation, your guide carries a well-equipped first aid kit, ensuring nothing happens to you.

High-altitude sickness: During the Tsum Valley Trek, you will walk through gorgeous valleys, traditional villages, and thrilling highlands above 3,000m elevation. Altitude sickness is unpredictable; it can happen to anyone despite being physically and mentally fit. As you gain altitude, the chances of getting altitude sickness also slightly increase. To avoid getting altitude sickness you should drink 5-6 lt water per/day and food with high carbohydrates. Walking slowly and acclimatizing decreases the chances of getting altitude sickness. Focus on your breathing and maintain your walking pace.
