Trip Overview

This 12‑day Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour isn’t just a trip, but a journey along the deep Kali Gandaki Valley. You’ll be passing through ancient walled cities, caves, Tibetan‑Buddhist villages, and serene landscapes, all without needing to trek!

Your adventure begins in bustling Kathmandu, then moves to historic Bandipur. And after experiencing a surreal sunrise, the jeep continues towards Pokhara and then to Tatopani

Only on the next day, your drive goes to Mustang, first reaching Marpha. Note that you can even stop by different waterfalls (like Rupse Waterfall) and try adventures along the way.

Your Lower Mustang journey reaches Kagbeni for the night, with a visit to Muktinath Temple the next morning. And after nearly 500 kilometers from Kathmandu (with those additional stops), you and your team reach Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the old Kingdom of Lo!

Along with the dusty desert landscape, you’d be blessed with the views of snow-capped peaks like Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Dhaulagiri. Not to forget the intimate local culture led by Thakalis, Gurungs, and Magars here, plus the Loba communities of Mustang.

Moving on to transportation, we believe in the freedom of a private jeep, so you’re never tied to group treks or rigid schedules. But that doesn’t mean solo travelers can’t participate.

So, are you ready to sip apple wine in Marpha, meet the local communities of Mustang, and check the restricted walled town of Lo Mantang? Or simply wish to enjoy the long drive through the heart of the mountains? Our jeep is awaiting your presence!

Well, this was just a brief overview of what’s coming up. We’re going to walk you through everything this Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour package has to offer. And we’re pretty sure you won’t hesitate to hit that ‘Book Now’ button.

Major Stops on This Tour

This jeep ride isn’t just about going from place to place. From the crowded lanes of Kathmandu to the quiet alleys of Lo Manthang, this trip takes you through temples, waterfalls, apple orchards, dusty trails, and peaceful towns and villages.

The journey begins with a full day exploring some of the most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. Then, you’ll hop onto a private jeep (with a maximum of four people onboard) that takes you to the charming Newari town of Bandipur.

After another stop in Tatopani, the real adventure into Mustang kicks off. And you’ll feel it the moment you come across the massive Rupse Waterfall. Continuing toward Marpha (famous for its apples) and then Jomsom, you’ll spend your first night in the beautiful village of Kagbeni.

The next morning, we’ve organized a short pilgrimage drive to the sacred Muktinath Temple. After returning to Kagbeni, the jeep heads straight to Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang. You’ll spend two nights there before making your way back to Pokhara, where a full-day sightseeing tour awaits.

Let’s explore these major places in greater detail below:

Start With Kathmandu’s Heritage Sites

Your journey begins with a full-day exploration of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It’s going to be an immersive tour through the city's most iconic cultural and religious landmarks.

This is also the perfect way to get started and learn about Nepal before heading toward the main highlight of Upper Mustang! You’ll visit four major heritage sites in the capital city of Kathmandu that every traveler should know about:

  • Pashupatinath Temple: One of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, where you’ll witness not just the temple, but also the cremation site and live rituals.
  • Boudhanath Stupa: A massive mandala and one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. It’s a pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists and a sacred spot you don’t want to miss!
  • Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple): Perched on a hilltop, this site offers panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. It holds deep Buddhist symbolism and is yet another pilgrimage site within the capital city.
  • Kathmandu Durbar Square: A living museum of Malla and Shah-era palaces, temples, and courtyards. The main highlight here is meeting the living Goddess Kumari and roaming around the vibrant Basantapur Durbar Kshetra for souvenir shopping and experiencing local life in the capital.

On this day of Kathmandu sightseeing, you’ll learn about the history, rituals, and architectural marvels of the capital city. And we’re sure you’ll love every bit of it!

Night Stay in Bandipur and Sunrise Views

The first stop on our jeep tour is Bandipur, a beautiful hilltop town known for its rich Newari culture and traditional architecture. And when the weather is clear, scenic mountain views too!

Back in the day, Bandipur served as an important stop along the India–Tibet trade route. Today, the town has transformed into a peaceful cultural escape that offers visitors a genuine taste of Nepal's heritage.

While there won’t be enough time on this journey for in-depth sightseeing, we’ll make sure you get to wander through Bandipur’s old bazaar. Along the way, you’ll visit a local Buddhist monastery and explore beautifully preserved temples.

A short hike to Thani Mai Temple also awaits, which doubles as a great sunset and sunrise viewpoint. So, along with a peaceful religious stop, you’ll also enjoy that serene mountain-town atmosphere Bandipur is loved for.

The Scenic Beauty of Rupse Waterfall

Your trip to Upper Mustang goes via the beautiful Kali Gandaki Valley. And as you approach Marpha, you’ll pass by one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Nepal, Rupse Waterfall!

We’re not stopping here just for a quick photo or video. You have to spend some time at this massive waterfall that’s been a favorite among travelers for years here in Nepal.

From the sound of the water crashing down to the refreshing spray hitting your face, Rupse will surely leave you recharged. It’s an energy booster like no other on this trip. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch rainbow reflections through the mist, making the entire scene feel almost magical.

Marpha: Village of Orchards

Another natural spot where you’ll stop for lunch, and also spend a night during your return is the Marpha Village. It’s part of the Lower Mustang region, sitting at around 2,680 meters above sea level.

The village is famously known as the APPLE CAPITAL OF NEPAL! And after tasting the local apples here, directly from the orchards, you’ll know exactly why!

Not just the fresh apples, even the locally made cider and brandy carry that natural Himalayan touch. It’s a must-try, seriously. Even if not a lot, just a sip for the experience!

Moreover, Marpha is home to the Thakali people. Yes, the same Thakali food you get to try in most places across Nepal originates from here. Their hospitality, rich culture, and distinct wooden houses with wide flat roofs are bound to mesmerize you!

One important fact about the place is that many Tibetan refugees have lived here for years. That’s why the Tibetan language is still widely spoken. And don’t forget to pay a short visit to Samten Choling Gumba, a beautiful monastery frequently visited by the locals.

When the skies are clear, Marpha village surrounds you with views of nearby mountains. And this is exactly where you start to feel your trip to Mustang truly begins. The landscape changes from here onward, and everything starts to look magical!

Jomsom: The Windy Valley of Lower Mustang

On your way to Upper Mustang, you’ll stop by the headquarters of the Mustang district, Jomsom. The famous winds of Mustang start from here, and you’d definitely want to wear your double-layer jackets and cover your ears too!

You won’t be spending an entire night here; it’s just going to be a short visit. But since our team at Altitude Himalaya wants you to properly explore the region, we can always spend some extra hours if you wish to.

From catching a glimpse of the Jomsom Airport (planes fly right above your head!) to visiting the nearby Dhumba Lake, make sure to spend the best time while you’re in Jomsom.

Kagbeni: Gateway to Upper Mustang

Kagbeni is another location in Lower Mustang where you’ll spend the night at an altitude of 2,804 meters. And what’s most fascinating is that this ancient village marks the official entry point into Upper Mustang, too.

Since you’re already in Mustang, the terrain, the vibe, and even the air start to feel thinner. While here, you can explore the narrow alleys, red mud-brick houses, and old monasteries.

Just like in Jomsom, the winds blow strongly here in Kagbeni. And on clear days, the mountain views go beyond what words can describe. You’ll be able to see Nilgiri, Annapurna, and the Dhaulagiri range from here.

Moreover, Kagbeni also acts as an acclimatization stop for anyone who hasn’t gone beyond 3,000 meters before. So, make sure to drink enough water from here itself. More on altitude sickness tips later on in this package!

Muktinath: A Brief Stop at the Spiritual Site

Located at an altitude of 3,710 meters, Muktinath Temple is one of the most important sacred sites for Nepalese people. It’s known as “Muktikshetra” to Hindus and “Chumig Gyatsa” to Buddhists. Meaning, the temple is sacred to both Vishnu and Avalokitesvara. Clearly, it shows how deeply the two religions go hand in hand here in Nepal.

After visiting the main temple, you’ll also come across 108 Holy Water Spouts, where pilgrims breathe under each one to cleanse their sins. Even if you’re not Hindu, you can still try it as a part of this tour. All for the experience!

Another fascinating thing you definitely don’t want to miss is the Eternal Flame inside the Jwala Mai Temple. Yes, you heard it right! Eternal, meaning it never goes off.

And since our jeep takes you to Muktinath Temple in the morning, you’ll get to witness the full sacred rituals people perform. You also have the option to stay at hotels nearby, but as mentioned earlier, you could opt for Kagbeni as well.

The Lost Kingdom of Lo Manthang

The absolute final destination on this 12-day Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour is the ancient walled capital of the Kingdom of Lo. Long before Nepal even existed, the Lo Kingdom thrived and served as a major trade route between Tibet, India, and other smaller kingdoms of Nepal.

Walled cities used to be a thing in the past, and Lo Manthang is the only one that still exists in all of Nepal. It’s wrapped in 2,472‑ft-long clay-brick walls with 14 towers and a grand entrance gate. Inside, you’ll find narrow lanes, mud‑brick homes shaded by prayer flags, the Royal Palace, and even a five‑storey fortress.

Since it’s very close to Tibet, the culture and customs here are quite similar. The local Buddhists regularly visit Thubchen and Jampa Gompas. So, even you should definitely check them out too.

And the highlight of visiting Lo Manthang is that the Lhopa locals and even the last Gyelpo (King) of Mustang still live here.

Lastly, those surreal landscapes you see all over social media: dry, red, harsh, yet strangely beautiful, with the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains in the background? You’ll get to experience that for real right here!

Wrap Up With Pokhara Sightseeing

Your Jeep tour ends here in Pokhara, which is known as Nepal’s “Tourism Capital” that provides a perfect balance of adventure, lakeside calm, and mountain panoramas. Maybe not as great as the views in Mustang, but this is still a place very close to the capital, offering mesmerizing views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna.

Visiting the most popular tourist destinations in Pokhara will perfectly wrap up your journey. And for that, we’re going for a full-day sightseeing tour:

  • Sarangkot: This is a famous viewpoint for sunrise and sunset in Pokhara. Besides that, we’ll also stop by the recently built Panchamukhi Ganesh statue to appreciate the architectural beauty.
  • Devi’s Falls: A Swiss lady named Davis was wiped away by the high force of this waterfall, thus the name. The waterfall becomes one of the most mesmerizing spots during the monsoon.
  • Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave: Along with a Shiva temple inside, this long cave takes you deep underground, from where you can glimpse Devi’s Falls from the other side.
  • Pumdikot Shiva Statue: This is a recently constructed massive 108‑ft Shiva idol on a hilltop that offers sweeping views of Pokhara Valley, and the mountains appear close from up here.
  • World Peace Pagoda: One of the two ‘Shanti Stupas’ in the country, where you’ll find a tranquil Buddhist stupa surrounded by a fresh and peaceful environment.
  • Phewa Lake: Just relaxing by one of the most serene lakes in Nepal is the best way to end any journey in Nepal. And the Lakeside just by is perfect to celebrate the completion of this wonderful journey.

Cultural Highlights

This Upper Mustang Jeep Tour comes packed with unique cultural experiences right from day one, starting in Kathmandu and then through Bandipur, Myagdi, Mustang, and Pokhara.

Along the way, you’ll meet people from various ethnic backgrounds, mainly Newars, Brahmins, Chhetris, Magars, Gurungs, Thakalis, and Tibetan Buddhists.

Each community has its own language, lifestyle, and traditions that you’ll witness firsthand. And if you time your trip well, you might also get to experience some of the region’s most vibrant festivals, with the grand Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang being the ultimate highlight.

Let’s take a deeper look at what makes Nepal’s cultural landscape so fascinating:

Deep Dive into Thakali and Loba Communities

Once you cross Myagdi district and head deeper into Mustang, you’ll experience a culture very different from the city areas. The faces you see, the homes, the food, and even the people you meet are all unique.

Both Lower and Upper Mustang are mostly inhabited by the Thakali people, known for their warm hospitality. You’ll stay in their stone-built homes throughout the jeep tour in the Mustang district and get to taste authentic Thakali-style Dal Bhat, apple brandy, and other local products! Don’t forget to bring back some souvenirs when you return.

You’ll also meet Tibetan Buddhist monks chanting in centuries-old gompas in Lo Manthang. Every village in this rural part of Nepal has its own story to tell, and you’re going to immerse yourself in their culture throughout this jeep journey!

And one more local ethnic group here is the Loba community that have strong ties with linguistic ties to Tibet.

Meet Multiple Ethnic Groups

Not just Thakalis. If you carefully explore this package, you’ll see that we’re taking you not only to Mustang but also giving you a rich experience of other regions along the way.

With that said, this jeep tour passes through a wide range of communities, each totally different yet living in harmony together!

The lower hills are usually inhabited by Brahmins, Chhetris, and Newars. As you move through the mid-hills, you’ll find Magars and Gurungs. Around Marpha live the Thakalis, and mostly Tibetan-influenced groups reside as you get closer to Lo Manthang.

On this 12-day tour focused on Upper Mustang, you’ll witness how diverse Nepal’s ethnic landscape truly is. While you may or may not notice it right away, the languages spoken, foods, and even the vibe change from village to village. The cultural switch-up might be overwhelming for many, but that’s exactly the beauty of this country!

Celebrate Unique Festivals in Mustang

There’s always some sort of festival happening in Nepal every month. The major ones, of course, are Dashain and Tihar, followed by others mostly celebrated by the Hindu community.

But note that in Mustang, things are different, as most inhabitants here are Buddhist who celebrate Tibetan festivals.

So if you’re lucky with your timing, Mustang will show you something truly unique, which includes masked dances, monks in bright robes, and rituals that seem out of this world.

The famous Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang is the biggest celebration! It lasts three days and features chants, fire, music, and spiritual drama. You’ll also get to experience other smaller rituals, like locals doing morning kora (circumambulation) around stupas.

There’s so much more to the customs and culture, and you’ll discover it all once you actually visit. So, hurry up and reserve your seats for the Upper Mustang jeep tour right away!

Welcome and Farewell Dinners

This journey starts with a warm welcome in Kathmandu. Unlike other packages, we are going to treat you with a traditional Nepali welcome dinner before the journey begins.

And when it all wraps up back in Kathmandu, there’s one final sit-down as well. A farewell dinner is also included within this package, and that comes with a cultural program, where you get to witness dances from different ethnic groups.

Optional Activities and Adventures of Your Choice

Now, this part isn’t included in the core package. But if you live for unforgettable moments, these optional adventures might just make your Upper Mustang Jeep Tour even more epic!

Note that these activities come at an additional cost. But trust us, they’re totally worth it.

Whether it’s rafting in the Trishuli, flying/soaring above Pokhara, or dipping in natural hot springs, each one adds a new flavor to your journey!

Here’s the deal: since some of these require advance booking or coordination, you need to let us know beforehand if you’re interested. We’ll arrange everything so the timing fits your trip perfectly.

Also, depending on road or weather conditions, we might slightly tweak the plans to give you the best possible experience without delays or hassle. Safety always come first here at Altitude Himalaya.

Let’s look at the activities and adventures now:

Trishuli White Water Rafting

If you’re up for a thrilling adventure, Trishuli rafting is the perfect optional activity to include on this jeep trip. It’s right on the way to Bandipur, so if your group’s in the mood, we can easily make this the first stop!

White-water rafting here is all about teamwork and the laughter you’ll share. The rapids are classified as Grade III, meaning it’s exciting enough to feel the rush but also safe and beginner-friendly. It’s one of the best group activities to bond with your travel companions before the real journey to Mustang begins.

Cable Car Ride to Manakamana Temple

For many Hindus choosing this Upper Mustang jeep tour, the Manakamana Temple is something you just don’t want to miss on the way. The cable car starts from Kurintar and takes you on a scenic 10-minute ride straight to the hilltop temple.

Stretching nearly 3 kilometers, Manakamana Cable Car happens to be actually the longest cable car ride in Nepal! The mighty Trishuli River down below, and many might skip a heartbeat, especially during the transitions.

Dip in Natural Hot Spring at Tatopani

You’ll spend one night in Bhurung Tatopani, a perfect stop before heading into Mustang. Located right beside the Kali Gandaki River, you’ll likely meet fellow travelers, trekkers, and groups on their way to Mustang.

Tatopani has become a popular hub for those coming off treks like Ghorepani–Poon Hill or even Annapurna First Base Camp (North ABC), and for one good reason: the natural hot springs! believed to have therapeutic properties.

The temperature of the pools reaches up to 72°C, intense yet soothing. That’s why it’s best to soak either in the morning or evening. If you love it, you can even enjoy another dip on your return journey.

Adrenaline-Rushing Adventures in Pokhara and Kushma

Many travelers stop by Kushma on their way to Mustang, and the same can easily be arranged on this jeep tour too.

Leaping off Nepal’s highest bungee jump in Kushma, suspended above the Kali Gandaki River, is one adrenaline-filled experience you might want to add to this journey!

Alongside that, Kushma also offers zip-lining and skywalk experiences. We can absolutely arrange these for you, but we’ll need to know your preferences before you finalize the booking.

In case you’d rather explore Mustang first and save the wild adventures for the end, Pokhara is your best bet!

There’s everything from ultra-light flights above the Himalayas, paragliding, bungee jumping in Pokhara, and even the world’s steepest zip-flyer!

Tour Guide, Tips

The 12-day Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour is thoughtfully designed for guests seeking the perfect jeep drive experience to the Forbidden Kingdom. Even if you’re on a tight schedule, we promise that this journey blends both a natural escape and deep cultural immersion.

This tour doesn’t just take you to Upper Mustang. You’ll also explore the tits and bits of the places along the way, including Bandipur, Tatopani, Kagbeni, Muktinath, and Marpha. Moreover, we’ve also included sightseeing in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Each destination presents its own unique charm and panoramic beauty, representing some of Nepal’s top tourist highlights. That said, don’t worry if you’d like to make changes to the itinerary. At Altitude Himalaya, we prioritize your experience above all. Any changes are absolutely possible. All we need is clear communication.

And to help you make informed decisions without second-guessing the package, we’ve answered some frequently asked questions in the section below. Let’s take a look!

Best Time to Visit Upper Mustang

To help you choose the best time to visit Mustang (especially the Upper Mustang side), we’ve carefully ranked the most suitable seasons:

  • #1: Spring (March to May): Offers pleasant daytime temperatures (16–22 °C) and clear skies, making it ideal for trekking and enjoying stunning vistas. You can even catch the vibrant Tiji Festival in May at Lo‑Manthang.
  • #2: Autumn (September to November): Known for clear and stable weather, crisp mountain views, and comfortable temperatures (10–20 °C). This is the peak season, but it can get overcrowded, so we’ve placed it in second position.
  • #3: Summer (June to August): Unlike most parts of Nepal, Mustang lies in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. That means it stays relatively dry with just occasional showers. Morning skies are usually clear, and the dramatic Yartung (Horse) Festival in August is something you shouldn’t miss.
  • #4: Winter (December to February): This is the least recommended season. Bitter cold (night temperatures can drop to –10 °C or lower), light snowfall, and most lodges remain closed. Only extreme adventurers are encouraged to consider this time.

What Kind of Jeep is Used For the Trip?

For the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour, we typically use a 4WD Mahindra Scorpio Jeep. This jeep is reserved exclusively for your private use, making it convenient to travel not only to Upper Mustang but also to all other destinations along the route.

What sets this trip apart is the inclusion of a comfortable 4WD vehicle, allowing you to fully enjoy and engage in the diverse range of activities throughout the journey. And your return to Kathmandu will be by flight.

Altitude Sickness and Learn Ways to Tackle It

Altitude sickness becomes a real concern once we cross Kagbeni and enter Upper Mustang. The elevation crosses 3,000 meters on Day 6, which is when many travelers (especially first-timers) may start feeling the effects of thin air.

Remember, the terrain gets drier, windier, and more remote as the altitude increases. As you ascend past Kagbeni toward places like Ghami, Tsarang, and Lo Manthang, oxygen levels drop noticeably.

Although the change is not drastic, this sudden gain in altitude can catch people off guard, especially if you’ve traveled too quickly or haven’t stayed well hydrated. Watch out for symptoms like headache, nausea, loss of appetite, dizziness, lightheadedness, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, and shortness of breath!

These are the early signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Your body’s way of telling you to slow down, and we’ll do so if necessary.

Ignoring these symptoms can lead to serious conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), both extremely dangerous. However, since you’ll have properly acclimatized in Kagbeni, such cases have rarely occurred on our trips, almost never.

Even if you experience symptoms, there are a few things you can do to manage altitude sickness. Here’s what our experts suggest:

  • First and foremost, inform the guide immediately.
  • Rest and ask the jeep to stop.
  • Hydration is essential, so drink warm water frequently!
  • Eat light meals to keep your energy up.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking at all costs!
  • Garlic and cloves can be helpful remedies, so consider bringing some or asking locals for assistance.
  • Only opt for medicines like Diamox if the problem escalates, and always consult a doctor before taking any medication.

Special Permits Required for Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour

To travel to Upper Mustang, you’ll need two main Annapurna permits:

  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS Card)

2026 Update: Even a single trekker is now eligible to obtain a restricted area permit (meaning you no longer need a minimum group of two). However, applications must still be processed through a registered trekking agency, and each guide can now accompany a maximum of seven trekkers.

Note that Upper Mustang is classified as a restricted region by the Government of Nepal, which is why the RAP is compulsory for all tourists. This policy has been in place for a long time. In fact, previously, Lo Manthang wasn’t accessible to the public at all due to conflicts with Tibet.

Today, the restriction exists for a different reason. It is primarily to protect the unique culture, ancient heritage, and fragile ecosystem of the region. Some places really shouldn’t be disturbed, and this part of Nepal is one of them.

The good news is that you don’t have to worry about the permits at all. Our team will take care of both permits, and all you need to do is submit these documents:

  • A copy of your passport
  • A valid Nepal visa
  • Two passport-sized photos

Since processing permits can take anywhere from four to six hours, or sometimes even several days. It’s best to provide us with these documents as soon as possible! You definitely don’t want to delay your trip, do you?

Lastly, don’t forget to get insured! Travel insurance isn’t mandatory in Nepal, but since you’re heading to a high-altitude region, we highly suggest one that covers your necessities.

Food and Accommodation on this Jeep Tour

On this 12-day Upper Mustang 4WD Jeep Tour, your stays and meals are going to be top-notch. The top hotels we’ve selected are committed to providing you with the finest experience within your budget.

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, our representatives will greet you at the airport and escort you in a private vehicle. From there, you'll be taken to a three-star hotel, where breakfast is included.

Similarly, on your arrival in Pokhara after returning from Mustang, our representatives will escort you from the airport to a three-star standard hotel for the best experience. This also only includes breakfast, as we recommend going out for lunch and dinner.

During your actual Mustang trip, your stays will be in the best available accommodation, considering there aren’t many three-star or five-star options. And for meals (except in Bandipur), breakfast, lunch, and dinner will all be included.

Your transportation for sightseeing around Kathmandu Valley as well as Pokhara will also be arranged in a private vehicle, accompanied by a professional government-licensed guide.

And since you’d be tired from all the vehicle tour lasting seven days, we’ve arranged a domestic flight for the return trip to Kathmandu from Pokhara.
