Helambu Circuit is a short cultural trek near Kathmandu Valley is quite popular among cultural travelers. This trek is culturally as well as naturally rich and is one of the most rewarding treks near Kathmandu Valley. This beautiful trek lies inside the Langtang region. This trek allows you to get insight into the unique Buddhist culture along with Hyolmo culture. Best time to visit Helambu circuit trek

Autumn (Mid-September to mid-December) are the best times to visit Nepal for Helambu Circuit Trek. During these months of the year, the sky is clear and with the minimum chance of rainfall amazing views of the mountain ranges and landscape can be seen throughout the trek. During the clear weather, you can witness the jaw-dropping views of Mt. Everest, Jugal, Manaslu, Langtang, and Annapurna ranges during the trek.

Meanwhile, during the Spring season of the year, you can witness the blooming rhododendron in most parts of the trekking route with moderate temperature. During monsoons, the trails may be difficult to walk with unpredictable weather, poor visibility and slippery trails.

What is Helambu Circuit Trek?

Helambu Circuit Trek starts after sightseeing some of the UNESCO World Heritage sites inside the Kathmandu valley. During this day you will also get time for shopping for the trek. The trek starts after an hour of drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal. Chisapani lies at an altitude of 2,215 meters above sea level and is one the most popular overnight stay places near Kathmandu Valley.

Gul Bhanjyang lies at an altitude of 2,140 meters above sea level and you will pass through Pati Bhanjyang, Thakuni Bhanjyang, Chibling, and Jhogin Danda before reaching this village. During your walk towards Thare Pati, you can have fascinating views of the mountain ranges of the Helambu region. You will pass through the beautiful rhododendron forest before reaching Thare Pati. 

One of the most significant and vintage monasteries dwells at Tarke Ghyang which lies at an elevation of 2,560 meters above sea level. Tarke Ghyang got its name from the Tarke Ghyang Monastery and along with this monastery Chiri Monastery is also one of the important monasteries of Tarke Ghyang. The walk to Ama Yangri is the most challenging part of the whole trek but you will get the reward upon reaching the peak. Jaw-dropping views of Everest, Langtang, Annapurna, and Makalu along with other mountain ranges can be seen from the peak. 

You will pass through a beautiful rhododendron forest before reaching Shermathang village situated at an altitude of 2,621 meters above sea level. One of the important monasteries dwells at Shermathang Village also and it is also one of the most developed villages of the Helambu Circuit. During the last day of the trek, you will walk to Melamchi Pul Bazar before getting a ride to Kathmandu.

Helambu Circuit

Helambu Circuit is one of the shortest trekking trails near Kathmandu valley. You will witness the amazing mountain ranges as well as the holy Gosainkunda Lake during your trek. The Sherpa and Tamang settlements with different cultures and traditions than that of the Khumbu and Rolwaling regions are also the main highlights of this trek. You will also get a chance to witness various monasteries carrying a lot of history within them. Starting from Kathmandu the highest point of this trek is Aama Yangri. It lies at an elevation of 3,771 meters above sea level. Despite its low altitude, you can still witness the 8000 meter peaks such as Mt. Everest, Annapurna Ranges, and Manaslu ranges. The locals of the Helambu area are called Hyalmo and are renowned indigenous people. They follow Tibetan Buddhist culture which is quite a unique tradition. 

Aama Yangri - a vantage viewpoint

With less crowded hiking trails, Aama Yangri is one of the hidden gems of the Helambu region. With an altitude of 3,771 meters above sea level, it offers an amazing view of peaks above 8000m in Nepal. Mt. Everest, Langtang, Annapurna, and Makalu are the main mountain ranges that can be seen from the top of the hill. Besides a mountain viewpoint, Aama Yangri is a religious site for the local Tamang and Sherpas communities of the Helambu area. The meaning Ama Yangri means the mother who protects or saviors the entire Helambu region. With its long history, the locals of the Helambu region still visit Aama Yangri on the full moon of Chaitra. Day 01

Kathmandu Arrival

Your Arrival Time (?): Our office representative will meet and greet you at Kathmandu Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu.

At. 06:00 PM: In the evening we will meet for a coffee and will brief you on the details of your trek program. If you arrive after 5 PM we will meet the next day for breakfast and brief you on the details about the trek.

Day 02

Kathmandu Sightseeing and Trek Preparation

At. 10:00 AM: You will visit for a full day sightseeing inside Kathmandu valley. You will visit historical monuments that include Kathmandu Durbar Square which is a collection of medieval architectural buildings that lies in the central part of Kathmandu city. It is also a place that boasts a diverse range of cultural artifacts and wonderful architectural styles, some temples, and a vivid display of Newari culture. 

Next, you will visit Swayambhunath also known as the Monkey Temple located on top of a hill west of Kathmandu city. Continue your excursion by exploring the Boudhanath Stupa which boasts Buddhist culture along with beautiful architecture and Tibetan culture. Last but not least Pashupatinath, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. You can get the blessing for the upcoming trek program. Besides sightseeing, you can do the required shopping for your trek in Thamel. Have dinner at the nearby restaurants while returning from sightseeing.

Day 03

Drive to Sundarijal, Trek to Chisapani

At 07:00 AM: After breakfast, our office representative along with your trekking guide and the potter will pick you from the hotel. After a short about 1 and a half-hour of drive, you will reach Sundarijal and start your trek. You will pass through Mulkharka and multiple tea houses before reaching the mountain pass at an altitude of 2,466 meters above sea level. After the mountain pass, you will decent downwards to reach Chisapani.

Day 04

Trek to Gul Bhanjyang

At 07:00 AM: After breakfast, you will start your trek towards Gul Bhanjyang. After a few hours of walking, you will reach Pati Bhanjyang situated at an altitude of 1,768 meters above sea level. During your walk, you can observe the amazing views of the mountains. The distance between Chisapani to Gul Bhanjyan is 15 km which you can cover in around 6-7 hours. Afterward, you will pass through Thakuni Bhanjyang, Chibling, and Jhogin Danda Ridge. You will pass through the rhododendron forest before reaching Gul Bhanjyang. Overnight at the teahouse.

Day 05

Trek to Thadepati

At 07:00 AM: After breakfast, you will start your trek. During the first few hours of the trek, you will start ascending to the top of the hill from where you can have an amazing view of the mountain ranges of Helambu Valley. Passing through the streams and steep hills you will reach Yurin Danda. Continue walking through the rhododendron forest until you will reach Tharepati. (From Thadepati the trail separates to another marvelous trek to Gosaikunda, if you wish to extend the trek you can inform us prior to your trek program.) The distance between Gul Bhanjyang to Thadepati is 14 km which you can cover in 6-7 hours. Upon reaching Thadepati you can witness the beautiful marvelous mountain ranges on top of hills.

Day 06

Trek to Tarke Ghyang

At 07:00 AM: After breakfast, you will start your trek. During the first few hours of the trek, you will start descending downwards until you reach a river. After that, you will climb upward towards Sherpa Village Nakota. After Nakota you will start descending and finally starts climbing before reaching Tarke Ghyang. You will witness one of the oldest monasteries in the Helambu area before reaching Trake Ghyang. At Tarke Ghyang also you will see a monastery from which the place got its name. You can also see one of the oldest monasteries in this area. The distance between Thadepati to Tarke Ghyang is 10 km which you can cover in 3-4 hours.

Day 07

Hike to Aama Yangri, Back to Tarke Ghyang

At. 07:00 AM: After breakfast, you will start climbing towards Aama Yangri which is the vantage point of this trek. It will take about 4 to 5 hours to reach Aama Yangri from Tarke Ghyang. You can either choose to hike up for a sunrise view. If you want to see the sunrise from the top you have to start walking At. 03:00 AM. During your walk, you will leave your bags at the hotel as you will return to the hotel again.

The distance to Aama Yangri (3,771m/12,372ft) from Tarke Ghyang is 3.8 km which takes 3-4 hours and back to Tarke Ghyang. From the top of Aama Yangri, you can have an awesome view of the mountain ranges including Mount Everest along with the Manaslu, Langtang, and Annapurna ranges during clear weather. The mesmerizing view will make your jaw drop with its never-ending beauty. Hike down to Tarke Ghyang for the overnight stay.

Day 08

Trek to Shermathang

At 08:00 AM: After breakfast, you will start your trek towards Shermathang. It will take about 5 hours to reach Shermathang from Tarke Ghyang. Today’s trail is easy with beautiful forest and few small streams on the way to picturesque Sherpa village where you can see ancient monasteries. Junga Himla range can be seen from the north face of Shermathang village. Upon reaching Shermathang you can visit one of the oldest monasteries around the area and interact with the locals or just visit the awesome Sherpa village. You can get to see the minimalistic and simple lifestyle. Interact with the locals and get to know about their day to day schedule and explore the surrounding area if you wish to.

Day 09

Trek to Melamchi Pul Bazaar, Drive to Kathmandu

At. 07:00 AM: After breakfast, you will start your descent towards Melamchi Pul Bazar. Today is the last day of your trek. You will pass through different small settlement areas and monasteries before reaching Melamchi Pul Bazar. Upon reaching Melamchi situated at an altitude of 828 meters above sea level from where you will drive to Kathmandu. The distance between Shermathang to Melamchi Pul Bazar is 17 km which you can easily cover in around 4-5 hours as the trail is easy and mostly downhill. Once you reach Melamchi you will then drive towards Kathmandu. The Total distance from Melamchi to Kathmandu is around 46 km. You can cover the distance in 2-3 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

You will be transferred to a hotel. You will have your day leisurely, you will have enough free time for shopping or roaming around Kathmandu Valley. However, if you want to go for authentic shopping for items such as handmade goods for souvenirs, and treat yourself to a relaxing spa after a week-long trek Thamel is the place for you. Enjoy the leisure time as you wish, and in the evening, join us for a traditional Nepali Dinner (Thakali Cuisine) with a live performance of folk songs as a farewell (If you want to visit other places, we can arrange it for you with extra add-ons)

Departure

You will have breakfast at the hotel and then have free time. Our office representative will drop you off at the Tribhuvan International Airport 3 hours before your flight time. Medical emergency: If you face any serious medical emergency during your trekking program you will immediately evacuate the place through Helicopter Rescue which the traveler’s insurance company will cover. While trekking to the highland of Nepal you may face minor health issues such as scratches, headaches, etc. For such a situation, your guide carries a well-equipped first aid kit, ensuring nothing happens to you. 

High-altitude sickness: During the Helambu circuit trek you will walk through gorgeous dense forests, traditional villages, and thrilling highlands above 2,400m elevation. Altitude sickness is unpredictable; it can happen to anyone despite being physically and mentally fit. As you gain altitude, the chances of getting altitude sickness also slightly increase. To avoid getting altitude sickness you should drink 5-6 lt water per/day and food with high carbohydrates. Walking slowly and acclimatizing decreases the chances of getting altitude sickness. Focus on your breathing and maintain your walking pace.

    This is a moderate level of the trek. The Helambu circuit trek is ideal for beginners and families as it is not a strenuous trek and can be completed within the basic level of fitness. A physically fit and mentally calm person can complete the trek easily.

  • What kind of accommodation do we get throughout our stay in Nepal?

    During your stay in Kathmandu, you will stay in a very comfortable 3-star hotel, and during your trek, you will stay in a teahouse and local lodges with basic amenities such as bedding, a clean washroom, and good (nutritious) food according to availability. If you want to upgrade the hotels in Kathmandu you can inform us before your arrival. However, you don’t have many options to upgrade accommodation during your trek days as there are limited options due to remoteness.

  • What and how many permits do you need for Helambu Circuit Trek?

    You will need two kinds of permits for this trek. You will need Langtang national park permit as Helambu lies inside Langtang national park and TIMs (Tourism Information Management System). You will also need to pay for Shivapuri national park entrance fee as you will pass through Shivapuri national park.

  • Do I need a guide for the trek?

    Yes, It is mandatory to have a licensed trekking guide for any trek in Nepal. Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has made it compulsory to take a local guide or porter foreign independent trekkers (FITs). Meaning even if you are a solo traveler/trekker you need to take a guide throughout your trek program. A guide will not only ensure your safety but also provide valuable information about the local culture, flora, and fauna.

  • When is the best time to visit Helambu Circuit Trek?

    The most admired season for trekking is Autumn which starts in Mid- September to mid-December as the weather is warm and the skies are clear meaning you can see the majestic peaks. Another great time to visit is from April to May when the beautiful Rhododendron blooms with moderate temperatures making the walk more enjoyable.

  • How long do we need to walk during the Helambu Circuit trek?

    This is a moderate/easy level trek meaning you don’t have to walk all day. You will walk around 11- 13 km which will be 4-7 hours maximum a day. The trail ascends and descends through dense forests and beautiful villages.

  • Is high altitude sickness risk in the Helambu circuit trek?

    The Helambu Circuit trek ascends to some high-altitude points such as Tharepati situated at an elevation of 4,085m/13,400 ft. The chances of getting high altitude sickness slightly increase as you to an altitude above 2400m/7,874 ft. Therefore, it is important to have a thorough understanding of the risk associated with high-altitude sickness during Helambu Circuit trek. 

  • How can I avoid Altitude sickness?

    Although altitude sickness is unpredictable, drinking 4-6 lt of water per/day, having high carbohydrate food, maintaining your walking pace, and focusing on breathing reduce the possible chances of getting altitude sickness. Also, acclimatization is essential before going to a higher altitude; it prepares your body to adapt to the surroundings (Less oxygen).

  • Do I need to bring camping equipment for the Helambu Circuit trek?

    There are teahouses and local lodges throughout the trekking trail with basic amenities such as comfortable bedding, clean toilets, and good (nutritious) food. However, you can choose to bring your camping equipment if you wish to get a camping experience. It is not mandatory but is optional. If you are planning to visit in peak season, taking your camping gear might be beneficial as well.

  • Is Gosaikunda and Helambu Circuit trek routes the same?

    Gosaikunda and Helambu circuit treks are different and if you ought to do Gosaikunda and Helambu trek together the trail takes you to Gosaikunda first and then toward Helambu. However, the trail separates from Thadepati leading you to Gosaikunda.
